What is Astronomy ? and what are the branches of Astronomy?

Astronomy is the study of celestial objects and phenomena. It is the all-encompassing term that studies everything beyond Earth’s atmosphere. It applies the concepts from physics, biology, and geology to explain their origin and evolution.”

Astronomy can be divided into 4 sub - fields :

• Astrophysics - Uses the laws of physics in space for research.
• Astrometry - Use for Mapping celestial bodies.
• Astrogeology - Use to examine rocks, terrain, and material in space.
• Astrobiology - In searching for extraterrestrial life in the universe.

And all these sub fields creates in total 17 branches of Astronomy!

Let's have a look at them...

1. Astrophysics: As we saw above 👆
Astrophysics is used to find out how the laws of physics apply to stars and celestial bodies.

2. Cosmology: Study to find out the creation of the universe, evolves, and its ultimate fate.

3. Spectroscopy: Use to find how light reflects, absorbs, and transfers between matter.

4. Photometry: Study of luminous astronomical objects  which are in space based on.

5. Heliophysics: How the sun’s constant and dynamic radiation affects its surroundings in space.

6. Helioseismology: How the interior structure and dynamics of stars are composed by observing waves from their surface.

7. Asteroseismology: Study of  the internal structure of stars by observing their oscillations.

8. Astrometry: The study of celestial bodies position and how they move in space .

9. Planetology: Formation of planets in the solar system with respect to there composition and history.

10. Exoplanetology: How many and where planets exist outside our solar system.

11. Astrogeology: Geology related to celestial bodies like moons, asteroids, meteorites and comets.

12. Areology: Geology of mars ❄️.

13. Selenography: Study of the physical features on the moon formed such as lunar maria, craters, and mountain ranges.

14. Exogeology: Geology related to celestial bodies like moons, asteroids, meteorites, and comets.

15. Astrobiology: How life (including extraterrestrials) in the universe evolved, originated, and what will be its fate.

16. Exobiology: How likely and where is life in space.

17. Astrochemistry: Study of the  substances in celestial bodies, stars, and interstellar space.
